The Futures Forward Lab is a workshop and seminar series designed to equip BIPOC producers and production companies with the skills and knowledge to create a comprehensive business plan, marketing and financing strategy and prepare a successful IDM Fund application.

Program Highlights

  • Eight intensive workshops and seminars conducted in person at venues in Toronto (between November 1 and November 23).

  • A focus on fast-tracking business development, enhancing competitiveness, and fostering long-term sustainability within the digital media industry.

  •  Access to additional 1-on-1 mentorship/coaching (up to 2 hours each) with a subject matter expert for feedback and guidance on your IDM projects.

  • Sessions that cover business strategy, financial planning and budgeting, marketing and audience engagement, legal and business affairs, and pitching

Program Breakdown + Session Dates

1 - Introduction to Interactive Digital Media | November 1, 2024

You will gain a foundational understanding of the IDM industry, including sectors, platforms and technologies. This session will introduce the opportunities available within the IDM landscape, setting the stage for developing your project.

2 - Developing your IDM project | November 2, 2024

You will learn how to develop a strong concept for your IDM projects, focusing on aligning your vision with audience needs and expectations and creating content that resonates with diverse audiences. By the end of the session, you will have a more straightforward project outline and a roadmap for the following stages of development.

3 - Business Affairs and Legal Considerations in IDM | November 8, 2024

You will gain a solid understanding of the critical business and legal aspects of running an IDM venture. You will learn how to protect your intellectual property, navigate legal agreements, manage risks, and ensure your projects comply with relevant laws. This knowledge will help you establish a strong foundation for your IDM projects, reducing legal vulnerabilities and enhancing business viability.

4 - Financing your IDM project | November 9, 2024

You will acquire practical budgeting and financial planning skills specific to IDM projects. You will explore various funding avenues and gain insights into crafting a successful application, particularly for the Ontario Creates IDM Fund.

5 - Producing your IDM project | November 15, 2024

This session will empower you with the knowledge to manage your IDM project's production phase effectively. You will learn best practices in team management and workflow organization, ensuring a smooth production process.

6 - Pitching and Presentation Skills | November 16, 2024

You will develop the skills to create and deliver impactful pitches that resonate with your target audiences. By the end of the session, you will have a polished pitch deck and increased confidence in presenting your projects to potential funders, partners, and other stakeholders.

7 - Marketing your IDM Project | November 22, 2024

You will develop a comprehensive marketing strategy tailored to your IDM project. You will learn how to engage audiences through various channels, build a strong brand, and position your projects for success in a competitive local and global market.

8 - Business Strategies for IDM Success | November 23, 2024

This final session will focus on equipping you with the strategies needed to ensure the long-term success of your IDM projects and businesses. You will learn to create sustainable business plans, identify growth opportunities, and build valuable industry connections.

Eligibility Criteria

NOTE: Successful applicants must be able to cover the $280 Lab Fee. This application fee covers the venue, instructor and operational fees required for the program.

The Futures Forward Lab is designed for Ontario-based and BIPOC-led production companies planning to apply to the Ontario Creates Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Fund.

Note: This program targets creators and companies developing digital linear content, such as web series, online streaming content, or content that includes interactive or immersive (AR, VR, XR) elements.
