Ramadan Mubarak: BIPOC TV & Film partners with Muslim International Film Festival to host community Iftar dinner

April 12, 2023 | We were thrilled to partner with the Muslim International Film Festival to host our first in-person community Iftar dinner. Smiles, laughter and great conversations filled the room at DMZ Sandbox, Toronto Metropolitan University, on a warm spring evening. Ramadan is a sacred month for Muslims around the world. During this time, Muslims prioritize community, worship and mutual aid. For many Muslims, it is also a time for fasting—abstaining from eating, drinking (water-included), and forms of physical intimacy and smoking. It’s essential to recognize that everyone has a unique relationship with their community and faith; no two relationships are the same. Iftar signifies the breaking of the fast. It’s a celebration of food, family and friendship.

MIFF is an Ontario-based celebration of Muslim filmmakers and cinema. Launched in 2020, the festival is run by an ambitious and passionate group of volunteers and young cinephiles with a mission to amplify Muslim representation onscreen and behind the camera.

Our gratitude to the MIFF team, especially founder and CEO Hirra Farooqi, all the volunteers for setting up the space, our food vendor Chachu’s, and DMZ Sandbox for providing the space for us to gather.
