Black women are leading a new era in Canadian film and television

From showrunners to directors, executive leaders to cinematographers, Black women are leading a revolution across the screen industries. Sam Chizanga pens a tribute to Black women in an August edition of NOW, lauding contributions to systemic change, new onscreen narratives and a wave of opportunities to enter and advance in this often closed industry.

“There are numerous Black women behind the scenes at our funders, film festivals, broadcasters, banks and production companies making transformative changes when and where they can. What I admire most about [Black women] is the love they have for the community. It’s palpable. It’s in every frame, every decision in front of and behind the camera. Their fearlessness keeps me going,” says Kadon Douglas, Executive Director at BIPOC TV & Film.

In what may be the final print edition of NOW, acting editor Radheyan Simonpillai spotlights leading voices in Canadian film. The August issue features profiles on Sarah Polley, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Kawennahere Devery Jacobs, Chandler Levack and rising stars Lamar Johnson and Kiana Madeira.
